August 1st, 2nd Day of MSTERIO The weather is so great! This morning, the cabin of Natsuki and Sena prepared us a breakfast. Other campers joined "Early bird club (for early-waking campers)" and enjoyed Zen and walking...we all welcomed a great morning in this fresh air. After eating yogurt, serial, muffins and fruits for breakfast, senior campers joined drama class. Junior campers worked under the art director Anthony, for his great "ART PREP PROJECT"... to reform the whole campsite to MSTERIO world. Then there was a huge cleaning party and kids worked from the corner to corner. New MSTERIO song was presented right before lunch. Our new song "I Will Move Mountains" is all in English...and is very mature! What a revolution...all campers are supposed to memorize this song during the camp. We had wild veggie over rice, shrimp and greens soup, and sweet, sweet, watermelon for lunch. "One point Language" is always performed during this time. Today, Maya and Nanami taught us how to say "August 1st" in Danish. (Søndag den 1. August) After body & mental relaxation in Quiet Time, we finally begun "Alumni Day" for 10th anniversary...many alumnus gathered for today's celebration. All teams cheerfully enjoyed games planned by Mr. Shin Takahashi, the pioneer of camp and recreation... (Ask campers for details when they come back!) We concluded "Alumni Day" with 10th anniversary ceremony...we sang Happy Birthday Song in front of our specially ordered birthday cake...and we didn't forget to celebrate Miki and Ryota, two MSTERIO alumnus who just got married in June! The surprise here was "Letters from Five Years Ago." These are written by campers who joined MSTERIO camp in 2005...to yourself in 2010! They finally got returned to today... (Some have already been returned to staff) so did you remember what you wrote five years ago? Dinner time after taking a soak in the hot spring! Herbed fried chicken, carrots, potato, green salad, rice and soup were provided. We could never stop our appetite! There were special projects organized by grades, and the staff visited each cabins to tell storied before they go to bed. And finally...they all dove into deep deep sleep...

You are SOOOO sweet!!!!
Thank you VERY much.

TWO Happiest Couples of MSTERIO!!! 2

TWO Happiest Couples of MSTERIO!!!
The two happy couples were brought together by MSTERIO: MIKI ♥ RYOTA and REIKA ♥ JUN. No words are needed to describe how happy they are as the photo tells you everything about it!
The master of the wedding ceremony was Kei-san, and the wedding has the theme of “DESTINY.”
The message board that REIKA & JUN are holding in the photo was made by SATOMI.
The MSTERIO members who attended the wedding could not stop crying to witness this happy couple.
Stay happy forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This photo was taken by YU- san. He kindly took photographs when MSTERIO’s Santas visited a Youth Center in Tokyo at the end of last year. He always shoots the warm and kind expressions on people’s faces.
Long time no see!

Long Time No See!
After sooooo long, I met two of the MSTERIO staffs in New York last week. They came from the U.S. twice to participate in a summer camp held in Japan.
ALYSSA joined a camp as CIT while she was in high school, and became one of our most popular counselors among MSTERIO campers after she started college.
JUSTIN came to the camp through the program, Princeton in Asia, and he took charge of the English and sports curriculum.
They are both graduating from college this May.
ALYSSA decided to become an English teacher in China. JUSTIN is going to get his Master’s degree in Education at University of Oregon, one of the most competitive schools. He is enthusiastic about pursuing a new adventure in his career.
ALYSSA and JUSTIN were full of energy. Although they feel a little nervous about their future, they are determined to enjoy what they decide for their future. We parted with big smiles.
JUSTIN will continue high jumping in Oregon. As he always has been, since JUSTIN is very very tall!!!!
Every summer, a memory of the MSTERIO camp comes up to their mind, they said. ALYSSA and JUSTIN promised to come back to Japan one day to meet everyone!
Each creates own path for the future, stepping into the big world. I just think that it is amazing.
Union Square Green Market

MSTERIO 10th Anniversary celebration is on our way!
MSTERIO 10th Anniversary Celebrations is on our way!
This summer, MSTERIO is going to have its 10th birthday!
We will celebrate it at “Sweet Charity Concert” in Tokyo on July 24th, and right now we are preparing to make it the sweetest “Make a Difference” Event.
Ten years ago, Mariko Hata, who is now a very famous musician, composed the two MSTERIO songs.
This year, MSTERIO’s new song was made in English titled “I Will Move Mountains” and was recorded in New York. It was made through great teamwork among the composer Carol Guerrero, a singer Janelle Renee, Music Director, Alex and recording mixer. The song will be played for the first time at the MSTERIO summer camp.
(Janelle was one of the finalists in American Idol, America’s popular TV program, in 2007!)
Please look forward to it.

SHUTARO - Honorable insury Shutaro
The Honorable Injury- SHUTARO
Today I would like to share a beautiful story about SHUTARO and his last race in high school. SHUTARO has been participating in the MSTERIO summer camp for a long time. (Photo: SHUTARO when he was in elementary school)
He was one of the athletes in the qualifying 400-meter hurdles race for the national high school track competition, where only the top three athletes qualify for the next race.
During the last lap, the biggest competition was for the third place, and SHUTARO was competing for this position!
There was an unbelievable amount of pressure on him, when he accidentally fell and hit the ground with his chest at the last hurdle. Yet, he got up and slowly walked to the finish line. He did not qualify, however he completed the race.
The ligament of his left leg tore, and both his legs were injured. “After falling very badly, he still stood up on his legs and used all his power to reach the finish line,” his mother mentioned. “It was just unbelievable.”
Before the competition, SHUTARO set a goal to break his best time, even if he could not make it to the final race. And he worked very hard toward his goal for the last half year for the race.
SHUTARO did his very best and his family witnessed that.
He said, “I tried and tried then lost, and I don't regret it. Well, however, I learned that things don't work out when you are too greedy.”
SHUTARO, who never gave up until the end, is extremely impressive. I believe that it was one of the best races without a doubt.
How moving and inspirational must have been for those who witnessed his race. It was a great “MAKE A DIFFERENCE” experience for SHUTARO, as well as his team, family and everyone around him.
SHUTARO, with honorable injury, we are so proud of you.
Make A Difference - Linda & ANPO

MAKE A DIFFERENCE- Linda & ANPO
LINDA HOAGLUND, who has always been supporting MSTERIO (as some of you remember, she was a guest for MSTERIO TEENS!), had a fund raising event for her upcoming movie, ANPO, at one of my friends’ apartment.
About 100 guests enjoyed the food from OMEN, one of the most famous restaurants in NY, as well as wines and drinks.
The live music with the guitar and accordion created a great atmosphere.
The couple, who own this spacious apartment, offered this space with no charge, and also bought all the drinks for the event.
Furthermore, the food from the OMEN restaurant was on the owner of OMEN. Surprisingly many people contributed and worked all together to support Linda and her movie.
As a result, the event raised as much as $3,500! This is exactly a “Make a difference” event and I cannot help but appreciate it.
Linda will soon finish filming her movie, and the magazine AERA will actually feature an article on the movie this week.
In addition, there is going to be a symposium at Yasuda Kodo, Tokyo University, on Tuesday, June 15, titled “60 Years of the Record and Memory of ANPO,” (“60-nen Anpo Toso no Kiroku to Kioku”) and Linda will be one of the presenters.
Admission to this event is FREE. Anyone can join. If you are interested, please email yasuda615@gmail.com.
A few MSTERIO members are going to be there to assist the event, as well.

Look Back in Anger - My Yoga Teacher Erin

Look Back in Anger- My Yoga Teacher Erin
It has been almost three years since Josh and I started learning yoga together.
Our teacher, Erin, offers a class where we can strive to be best and understand each posture.
Although her lesson starts at 6:30 am, she welcomes us with a very nice smile every time. No matter how sleepy we feel, her warm smile gives us a comfort.
She also has another face as an “actor.” Erin has been learning ballet and modern dance longing to become an actor since her childhood. Her dream has come true. She is working hard as an actor while she teaches yoga.
Erin plays a main character in the performance “Look Back in Anger” by John Osborne, and Thomas and I went together to see it. It has been a very famous play in time, and has become a movie and a Broadway show.
In the small theater located on 26th street and 2nd Avenue in East side in Manhattan, all the five actors performed wonderfully taking our breath away. The story was so tragic and dark that I wondered why everyone had to be unhappy, and it made me cry the whole time. Especially, Alison Porter, played by Erin, made the climax scene extremely moving by crying out loud.
Erin, who shows up with a bright smile to the yoga class, looked completely different on the stage. Her appearance as an actor was just so impressive. In Manhattan, there would be numerous people who seek a dream to be an actor and have not been able to make it come true. Therefore, I think, the efforts of those who made it to the stage are beyond our imagination.
However, Erin said “it was never hard for me since both yoga and acting are what I love the most and have a passion for,” while it is not easy for many people to make what they love to do as a career.
One of the biggest reasons why I respect her is because of the fact that she has a very positive attitude and never gives up in the process of following her dream.
Our yoga classes for the next two weeks will be cancelled since Erin is going to Ireland for the play. I wish Erin the best and that she will be on the Straight Play on Broadway soon, and I will make sure that I am seated on the first row at her very debut performance.
